Update June 22, 2010

Dear Friends,

Thank you much for your expressions of concern, affection and prayers. I have forwarded them to Ingrid and Anita who are seeing her on a daily basis. Kathy has begun radiation. Her treatments are five days a week and will end July 14th. She is in good spirits but both she and Bill are taking some time to regroup. At this point, neither are using email, but you are most welcome to send a note.

Araceli Centanino, Alicia’s daughter, will post notices on this blog as Ingrid, Anita, and Terry are able to share information. Brad and I will be on the east coast, returning July 14th when I can answer email.

Thank you!
Therese and Brad

Kathy McWilliams

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

Kathy and her family have asked us to inform you that Kathy has been diagnosed with lung cancer. The cancer has metastasized to her brain. There are two tumors in the brain as well as a lesion. Linda Buchanan and Terry O’Connor, Kathy’s sisters, have taken her to several neurology and oncology appointments. They also have received a second opinion from UCLA Cancer Institute oncologists.

Kathy has decided to pursue Whole Brain Radiation Therapy as a first line of treatment. WBRT is intended to address the tumors in her brain. Kathy and all of us are very hopeful that the treatment will stop the growth of the tumors and put her on a course that will treat the lung cancer. She is in otherwise excellent health and is now in good spirits.

Two weeks ago Monday, when she was unable to speak, Kathy drove herself to the hospital thinking she had suffered a stroke. A series of tests was done which lead to the current diagnosis. Terry took Bill and Kathy to Palm Springs last weekend where they could regroup and Kathy could receive the care and attention she needed to start regaining her strength. As some of you know, Kathy was facing some health problems this past semester so had lost considerable weight. She is doing much better now and her appetite has returned.

Terry and Linda are overseeing the treatment process, however, help is needed with transportation and with meals. Our friend, Ingrid, will be setting the transportation schedule and our friend, Anita, will setting up the meal schedule. Their email addresses are: Ingrid Tarikas: ingridtarikas@gmail.com, Anita Borrega: ciaoanitacara@yahoo.com"

We anticipate some level of help being needed for the next few months. We will be in touch as the treatment processes are developed. Marta is creating a blog, we will send access information as soon as it is available.

Please keep Kathy, and her family, in your thoughts and prayers. Our friend is very hopeful and, with her lovely countenance and optimism, good things must be coming.

Therese and Brad
